Ok, we are not being shy, but here is why. Every time we start to design a new product we look at all the current products in that category and what we do and what we don’t like about them. This mute was no different. There are so many qualities to the metal straight mute that we love, not surprisingly, which makes them so in demand by all trumpet players. But boy oh boy do they all have some issues! First and as always most important is the pitch. Prior to Soulo Straight Mute, there was no straight mute that played in tune. We checked them all, note by note. We then designed our patent pending aerodynamic shape with crimp-free connection and perfect hemispherical bottom and improved not only the pitch but also the playability. Soulo Straight mute is very easy on the chops and free-blowing. It projects well with a brilliant sound liked by classical, commercial, jazz and all other musicians. Soulo Straight Mute is the mute of choice for professional trumpet players like Wayne Bergeron, James Ackley, Rob Schaer and the Hollywood Bowl trumpet section, the LA Philharmonic and many others.
When we set out to design our cup mute for trumpet, we knew two things for certain: it needed to have the old, traditional “cup” sound of the Ray Robinson, and Mica mute, but unlike those amazing sounding mutes, we wanted the Soulo cup to also have a perfect pitch. It took a total of 6 months to design the Soulo Adjustable Cup. We used the same We made it adjustable, so that all bell sizes could enjoy it without having to file down their corks. There is a point in the adjustable setting, which each trumpet player has to find, where the Soulo Mute sounds almost identical to the Ray Robinson, Mica cup mutes. We were proud we managed to create this mute and help the community of trumpet players who were paying upwards of $300 to restore their old Ray Robinson, Mica and Shastock mutes. Anyone can now afford to sound as amazing as these old school mutes would have made them to, for less than $60. The added bonus of the Soulo Cup mute is that it is also very free blowing and easy to play, in addition to having a perfect pitch.
When I bought this mute a few weeks ago, I was not sure if I needed a replacement for my traditional Humes & Berg bucket mute. (seems like I’ve only ever sent this model used by my fellow players.)
The Soulo mute is easy to clip on the bell of my Bach (actually easier than my Humes & Berg), and was easy to adjust into both a traditional position, and also a tilted position. This allowed for a difference in “tone”, that I was not aware possible with a bucket mute.
I have found this mute blends well with others in my big band section, and also has a very good tone & intonation for various jazz ensembles I play in.
The price is $68, which is quite a bit more than the $25 Humes/Berg bucket mute, but can honestly say this mute is worth the extra price. Also, have found I use it as not just a bucket mute, but also as a fit between my cup mute, and my old bucket mute.
I would highly recommend this mute to add to your collection (that you will actively use).
